Collection
The vast majority of the food is purchased by the Food Distribution
Center, some is donated by food companies and some is collected from
companies by employees, schools or youth organizations, and transferred
to the food warehouse.
Sorting and Packing
The food that is collected is sorted and repackaged, mostly by high
school students as part of the Personal Commitment, Volunteer Education
and Contribution to the Community programs. The students arrive
once every two and a half weeks and spend the whole day packaging
the food on an assembly line and preparing the premises for distribution
of the packages.
Distribution
Distribution is done once every two and a half weeks by volunteers who use their own cars and a bus that is allocated by Dan Ltd. for each distribution day. The volunteers also include commercial companies and IDF units that have teamed up to participate in the distribution activity. As it is hard for many of the needy to get to the center on their own and to carry the packages, the food packages are delivered directly to their homes, with the goal and intention of maintaining the recipients' right to privacy.
Packages
The
cost of a basic food package per family is NIS 170. The
cost of a holiday package (Rosh Hashanah and Passover) is NIS 260.
The packages include a wide variety of dried & nutritious foods
and their contents vary slightly in accordance with the recipient's
needs: Families with babies receive additional baby food and baby
products; packages for the elderly - soft products; packages with
sugarless products for diabetics. The Food Distribution Center recently
began distributing Sabbath packages, including the delivery of fresh
foods, once every two weeks. |
